The fractal brain.

    Since the publication of Mandelbrot’s book, The Fractal Geometry of Nature, fractals have found applications in many fields, including the biomedical sciences. In light of the hodological interconnection of ideas regarding the study of the amazing and complex system called the cerebrum, it seems natural that neuroscientists also peered through the lens of fractal analysis. The brain has been investigated as fractal, self-similar in both neuroanatomical structures and neurophysiological time series in its entire physiopathological spectrum. This talk will introduce a heuristic approach for the application of fractal analysis to the neurosciences, covering the following topics: 1) Tenets of fractal geometry and its applications to the neurosciences 2) Fractals in neuroanatomy and basic neurosciences 3) Fractals in clinical neurosciences (e.g., neuroimaging, neurosurgery, neuropathology, and cognitive neurosciences): The fractal dimension as a useful biomarker from bench to bedside 4) The fractal fingerprinting of the brain: Future perspectives of the computational fractal-based analysis in brain features extraction and patterns characterisation.
