Location : Australian Hearing Hub, 3.610, Macquarie University.

There were three major ‘turns’ in the study of language and cognition: linguistic, cognitive and pragmatic. It is argued that the most effective approach towards understanding the origin and evolution of communication and social/individual cognition is a pragmatic turn. It considers actions (distributed actions), embedded in the context of the environment, as a basis for the evolution and development of conventional language, abstract thinking and for the origin of complex society. The essence of memory and non-genetic inheritance in nature and society are revised in light of a process approach. The role of mathematical, formal and abstract models in the description of dynamic systems and processes is also reviewed.
