I also have a profile at the ARC Centre for Excellence in Cognition and its Disorders.

Profile

I was born near Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and obtained a Bachelor's degree with Honours in Biology and Psychology from a small liberal arts college (Westminster) in an Amish town. As luck would have it, while there, I was introduced to the field of Neuropsychology and had the chance to meet Prof Brenda Milner. Subsequently I became Prof Milner’s student at McGill University/Montreal Neurological Institute, where I worked with patients undergoing surgery for epilepsy. Along the way, I had the chance to administer some of the tests I had designed for my thesis to H.M. In 1987, I finished my PhD thesis on the ability to generate and inhibit responses after brain lesions. I was awarded a two-year postdoctoral position at the University of Auckland under the joint supervision of Dr Jenni Ogden and Prof Michael Corballis. Upon completion, I returned to Canada and took up my first "real job" as a Neuropsychologist in the Epilepsy Unit of University Hospital, London Ontario. A few years later, I became employed as a Clinical Neuropsychologist at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Senior Clinical Lecturer in Medicine at the University of Sydney. Since moving to Sydney, I have performed more than 1,600 neuropsychological assessments and supervised more than 50 students in clinical internships and research projects. My main interest is in the effects of focal brain lesions on memory. I work collaboratively with researchers in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the Netherlands.
