Profile

I completed a Bachelor of Linguistics at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands, in 2008. I continued with a Masters of Neurolinguistics at the University of Groningen. As part of this degree I completed a research internship in 2009 at the Macquarie Centre for Cognitive Science (MACCS), under supervision of Prof Lyndsey Nickels. This internship resulted in a research thesis on a case of acquired letter-by-letter reading. After finishing my Masters degree in 2010, I worked at a centre for assessment and treatment of learning disorders (primarily dyslexia) in the Netherlands. In 2011 I decided to come back to Macquarie University to commence a PhD under supervision of Prof Lyndsey Nickels and Dr Saskia Kohnen. My PhD investigates acquired spelling impairment after brain damage, through experimental case studies and treatment studies.

My PhD is also part of an Erasmus Mundus Joint PhD program called IDEALAB: International Doctorate for Experimental Approaches to Language and Brain. Macquarie University partners in this program together with four European Universities: University of Potsdam, Germany; University of Groningen, the Netherlands; University of Trento, Italy; and Newcastle University, UK (http://em-idealab.com).
